History and Origins

Dube is a Zulu clan name (isibongo) derived from the wildebeest, the clan's sacred totem animal. In Zulu tradition, clan names serve as both surname and identity marker, connecting families to a shared ancestor and a spiritual relationship with their totem. To call a Dube person by their clan name in traditional greeting is to honour their lineage.

The Dube clan traces its ancestry to the early Nguni settlements of what is now KwaZulu-Natal. The wildebeest — powerful, gregarious, and capable of extraordinary endurance — was regarded as embodying the character of the clan. Clan praise poetry (izibongo) for the Dube family celebrates these qualities through generations of oral tradition.

The Dube surname spread beyond KwaZulu-Natal through migration, labour movement, and urbanisation during the 20th century. It is now common across Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and the Eastern Cape, as well as in Zimbabwe and other parts of southern Africa where Nguni people settled.
