Meaning & Origin
Origin: Xhosa / Mpondо
Meaning: A clan name of the Mpondo people of the Eastern Cape, associated with the Madikizela chieftaincy of the Bizana area; the name's root relates to a founding ancestor of the lineage
A Mpondo clan name from the Eastern Cape, made internationally known as the birth surname of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, one of the most significant and controversial figures in the history of the anti-apartheid struggle.
History of the Madikizela Name
Madikizela is a clan name of the Mpondo people of the Eastern Cape, from the Bizana district of what is now the former Transkei homeland region. The Mpondo are a Nguni-speaking people related to but distinct from the Xhosa, and the Madikizela name is associated with one of the chiefly lineages of the Mpondo nation.
The name became internationally known through Nomzamo Winifred Madikizela (1936–2018), who married Nelson Mandela in 1958 and became known to the world as Winnie Mandela — though she later insisted on using her birth surname alongside Mandela's, eventually becoming Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. Her father, Columbus Madikizela, was a teacher and later the Minister of Agriculture in the Transkei Bantustan government — a position that placed the family within the educated Mpondo elite but also in a politically ambiguous position given the ANC's opposition to Bantustan structures.
Winnie Madikizela-Mandela became one of the most prominent figures in the anti-apartheid movement during the long years of her husband's imprisonment (1964–1990). She was subject to repeated banning orders, house arrest, and imprisonment by the apartheid government, becoming a symbol of resistance both within South Africa and internationally. She was known as "the Mother of the Nation."
Her legacy is complex: she was acquitted of kidnapping charges in 1991 but the conviction of her Mandela United Football Club in the death of fourteen-year-old Stompie Seipei cast a shadow over her reputation. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission found her responsible for gross human rights violations in the late 1980s. She remained a popular figure within sections of the ANC and among many South Africans who emphasised her decades of resistance over the controversies of her later years. She died in April 2018.

Tracing Madikizela Ancestry
Mpondo genealogical records are held in the Cape Archives Repository and the Eastern Cape Provincial Archives in Bhisho (formerly Bisho). Methodist mission records, particularly from Clarkebury and other Transkei missions, are important sources for Mpondo families who converted to Christianity in the nineteenth century. The Madikizela chiefly lineage can be traced through oral tradition and colonial-era records from the Bizana district. The University of Fort Hare's De Beers Library in Alice holds significant Eastern Cape historical material.
