History and Origins

Motsepe is a Tswana surname associated with the Tswana-speaking communities of the North West Province and the Northern Cape — part of the broader Sotho-Tswana language group that inhabits the highveld regions of southern Africa. The name is a clan or family identifier within the Tswana naming tradition, where personal names and clan names carry ancestral and spiritual significance.

The Tswana peoples — including the Bafokeng, Barolong, Bakwena, and Bangwaketse — have a long history of settlement in the highveld and the regions that became the Bechuanaland Protectorate (now Botswana) and the North West Province of South Africa. The discovery of platinum under the Bafokeng lands in the North West produced one of the most remarkable stories in modern South African economic history: the Royal Bafokeng Nation negotiated a royalty share from Impala Platinum, making the Bafokeng nation one of the wealthiest communities in Africa.

The Motsepe name became internationally known through Patrice Tlhopane Motsepe (born 1962), a South African mining magnate and philanthropist who became the first black African to appear on Forbes magazine's list of dollar billionaires (2008). His fortune was built through African Rainbow Minerals, which he founded after purchasing unprofitable gold mines from Anglo American in 1997 and turning them into profitable operations. He is the chairman of Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club and was elected as President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in 2021.

Patrice Motsepe is married to Tshepo Motsepe, sister of former South African President Cyril Ramaphosa — a family connection that places the Motsepe name at the intersection of South Africa's most powerful business and political networks.
