History and Origins

The Tambo surname belongs to the Mpondo people, a Xhosa-speaking group whose heartland lies in the former Pondoland area of the Eastern Cape — the coastal region between the Umtamvuna and Mbashe rivers, now part of the Wild Coast. Like all Xhosa clan names, Tambo identifies the bearer within a genealogical and cultural lineage.

The name came to international attention through Oliver Reginald Tambo, born in 1917 in Bizana in the Eastern Cape. Tambo's family were mission-educated, and Oliver was among the first generation of black South Africans to receive a university education — studying at Fort Hare University, where he first met Nelson Mandela, beginning a partnership that would define the anti-apartheid movement.

After the Sharpeville massacre in 1960, Tambo left South Africa to represent the ANC in exile, operating from Lusaka, Zambia and London for three decades. His quiet, diplomatic leadership — in contrast to the iconic imprisonment of Mandela — kept the ANC operational and internationally recognised through the darkest years of apartheid.

OR Tambo, as he was known, returned to South Africa in 1990 after the unbanning of the ANC, but died in 1993, a year before the first democratic election. Johannesburg's main airport was renamed OR Tambo International Airport in his honour in 2006.
