A topographic surname from linde or linden, the linden or lime tree — one of the most characteristic trees of the Dutch and German landscape, planted along village roads, in church squares, and at the centres of settlements. Families bearing the name lived near a notable linden tree or linden grove. The linden was sacred in Germanic tradition and practically important for its fibre, medicine, and timber. Van der Linden is the standard Dutch form; the German equivalent Lindner or Von der Linden follows the same origin.
